Fate of The Office

When watching Conan O'Brien rip apart NBC the last few days I have realized that no matter what he does he will really only damage the Tonight Show (if anything.) When you think about it people do not watch any major network because they support the network, they do it because they like whatever TV show, sporting event or movie they are watching. It comes down to the fact that most people are only activists until it starts to negatively effect their personal life. My example was no matter how much people like/support Conan if you are a fan of The Office you will not stop watching it. This was the only example of NBC programming (other then sports) that my friends and I all said we watched.

Now their is a chance that may be coming to an end.

On Thursday NBC played their first new episode of the Office since the holiday episode on December 10th...if you want to call it a new episode. The majority of the episode involved clips of the past six seasons. The editors did a great job incorporating funny stunts, side characters, love affairs, and multiple montages that were great (with the exception of not having enough Andy.)

This does worry me though because it may mean that the Office writers are out of steam or the show may be on its way out. It is hard to see that show lasting much longer at its current caliber regardless of whether or not this show was aired. The main character (Jim) has already married Pam (main love interest of the show) and they are going to have a baby before the end of the season. It has also already gone six seasons (this one being the worst in my opinion) and have to pay for stars at the caliber of Steve Carrell.

In addition to these reasons that I believe the Office is either on its way out or on its way to being the next "Saved By the Bell: The New Class" their are two more interesting "coincidences." And this many coincidences only happens on the show Lost or when they are not really coincidences.

One- Ricky Gervais is rumored to appear on an episode of The Office before the end of the season. Ricky is the original Michael Scott as well as a writer and director of the original series on the U.K. This would be his first appearance on the show and something they may have wanted to do before the series had ended.

Two- Situations surrounding Steve Carrell. The first of which is how the character Michael Scott handled "The Banker" who was coming to see how everything was at Dunder Mifflin Scranton. He continuously made pleas that everything was okay and ends the episode by saying "I think the future is very bright" but the episode seemed to me like a plea to continue the show. In addition if NBC is thinking about cancelling them it makes sense that Steve Carrell has been confirmed as a special guest on the last episode of the Tonight Show with Conan at 11:35 which should be an event that is both "a lot of fun" and bashes NBC's decision to move Conan's time.

...Or maybe NBC had scheduling conflicts/wanted to save some time or money...who knows?

Who is the main character on The Office?

This question seems like a pretty reasonable one. Their is a television show that is going into its 6th popular season so it should be apparent by now who the main character(s) is/are, but really it isn't. I started talking to Dan yesterday about this at the infamous diner and it led into today talking to Jay and we got three very distinct answers. I am going to try and explain all of these answers so we can figure out which makes the most sense...

Steve Carrel/Michael Scott:

One: the British version of the show was centered around this character because he was a creator of the show.

Two:Michael Scott has the advantage of being played by the only actor who was at all famous before the Office

Three: Steve Carrel was nominated for the Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy series.

Four: Many people believe the humor is based off of Michaels character

John Krasinski/Jim Halpert

One: He is the character that develops throughout the show and has the most involved personal life

Two: The character that you are most likely to relate too

Three: Part of the main romantic relationship

This answer did not make sense to me at first but then I remembered why I thought Jim Halpert was the main character. It is because I feel that the best type of entertainment is entertainment that I can relate to. I can relate to him because he is always making sure everyone around him knows what ridiculous things are going on and is always thinking about awkward situations. This is the same reason why I like the dialog from Thank You For Smoking at the Carnival...

Once I realized the I like Jim because I can relate to him and I enjoy relating to characters I realized why Pam and Dwight could be equally main characters. A female looking for someone to relate to would clearly go to Pam and anyone who thinks that Cramer is the reason for Seinfeld's success or beliefs that ridiculous comedy is the key to The Office would have to go with Dwight.

So there you have it folks... I think about the Office way to much. Who do you think is the main character and why?
